26 : Building the City Wall

In the North East sector of my Troy, the Citadel Wall and City Wall come close together. The City Wall was not a full circuit wall. It would have connected with the Citadel Wall at both its ends. This coming together in my setup would be off the tabletop.

This is the first time in my blog that I’ve mentioned the City Wall I designed for my Troy setup. The models were produced two years ago and have been available in the SLD Shop all this time as Aegean City Walls.

I positioned my first City Wall model up against the table-edge. This Outward Angled wall section (SLD-M28-BK-404) stands on the northern edge of the setup – like the Citadel Walls’ Straight Wall section.

The City Wall is impressive enough as a Bronze Age fortification. But standing next to the Citadel Wall, shows just how awesome Troy’s Citadel Wall was.

I took time out here to design a lowly hovel to fit in the tight space between the walls. I wanted to leave room for a mule track along the Citadel Wall which, let’s imagine, leads north to a small gateway in the City Wall. This idea is very much based on marvellous illustrations in Osprey’s Troy in their Fortress series but also has a good basis in fact as the track might lead – or have led – to the city’s water supply.

I wanted my hovel to show some sign of subsistence farming so I added a couple of lines of planting. Because the model was going to stand right on the edge of the tabletop, I enjoyed adding a little more detail to what was a very humble abode. I glued on two brackets to the doorway wall for a shelf, which I’ll add later.

The model has a specially designed base, shaped for the angled space between the walls.
